Mãe d' fidje is a Cape Verdean Creole expression that means literally "mother of children", but its real meaning is more profound. Women in Cape Verde have been often mothers and fathers at same time. Traditionally this is a country of emigrants (more Cape-Verdean People live abroad than in the islands) and usually many men emigrate leaving the women in Cape Verde. Adding this to some carelessness of the Cape Verdean men, many women (I'd say, most women) have to raise their children alone, but often with the help of some relative of the large extended family.
Nha Julinha was a real mãe d' fidje, in the worst years of the 20th century, the times of severe droughts and famines. She's no more a "mother of children". But now, almost 90 years old, she is a "grand-mother of grand-children", as she takes care of several of her grand-children and great-grand-children, some of them in this picture.
You see here Nha Julinha in front of her humble home in the neighborhood of Fonte Francês, in the outskirts of Mindelo, São Vicente Island. Her grand-daughter, at right, is the same of my previous post.
The t-shirt of the other girl displays propaganda of Pedro Pires, the favorite among humble people for President of the Republic.

Mãe d' fidje é a expressão crioula cabo-verdiana que significa literalmente "mãe de filhos", mas o seu verdadeiro significado é mais profundo. As cabo-verdianas são muitas vezes mães e pais ao mesmo tempo, já que os homens emigram mais e, noutros casos, dão pouca atenção aos filhos. Contudo, há também habitualmente o apoio de outros familiares.
Nha Julinha foi uma verdadeira mãe d' fidje, nos piores anos do século XX, nos tempos de secas severas e fome. Ela já não é uma "mãe de filhos". Agora, com quase 90 anos, é uma "avó de netos", pois toma conta de vários netos e bisnetos, alguns dos quais estão na foto.
Aqui está Nha Julinha em frente à sua humilde casa em Fonte Francês, um bairro dos arredores do Mindelo, ilha de São Vicente. A sua bisneta à direita é a mesma da minha foto anterior.
A t-shirt da outra menina apresenta propaganda de Pedro Pires, o favorito entre o povo humilde para Presidente da República.

Hi Francisco, really beautiful and colourful photo, also with full of lessons with your note. People in Cabo Verde maybe poor, but I am sure they are happier than many of the people living in western countries. I very much liked their smiling faces.

Oi Francisco,
Ótima tomada, uma gracinha estes filhotes, tanto os bípedes quanto os de quatro ;-) E a vovó rodeada dessa alegria toda, cuida deles e eles vão cuidar dela. Assim é que é saudável. Para quem teve filhos, é a evolução natural, na minha opinião. Muito melhor do que acabar numa casa para idosos, como acontece aqui. Mas a coisa é mais complicada do que parece e isto é outra história.
Tem uma coisa que me chamou a atenção nesta foto - a luminosidade. A claridade dentro de casa é igual à do lado de fora, como se houvesse sol lá dentro também. Normalmente, quando há sol do lado de fora, o interior das casas, visto assim por uma porta aberta, fica escuro. Ficou diferente, muito interessante, mas gostaria de entender como isso se deu.
A gente pode dizer que tem sol nesta casa :-)

this shot is nice in so many ways. Lovely light and extreme colors. They are beautiful. Perfectly saturated when they could have easily been overdone. I love the arch the people make from left to right, ending with the little boy in bright yellow. This is an intricate shot that appears simple. There are so many things to explore in it. Olá Francisco, aqui talvez considerasse cortar à direita para ficar só com esta bela parede laranja como fundo. Mesmo ficando apertado do lado direito, o elemento principal é a mãe enquadrada pela porta e a olhar para ti. E lá dentro é verde. Um conjunto bem agradável e cheio de cor.

Bonita escena familiar, acompañada de una excelente nota explicativa. Hay mucha vida y muchos años en las diferentes generaciones que se ven en esta imagen, con una gran luz y unos colores fuertes y bien saturados.

Hi Francisdo,

I find this a captivating picture. The happy people, the matching yellows and pinks of their clothes, the cute little puppies, the colors of the outer and inner walls, the contrast with the adjacent wall.

I also find the lighting to be very unusual - there seems to be sunlight coming from inside the house, as can be seen on Nha Julinha, her shadow on the floor, the bright interior. I wonder if there is a skylight or an opening in the roof?
