Photographer's Note

The Clube Náutico (Nautical Club), in downtown Mindelo, São Vicente Island, Cape Verde. This is the façade on the Avenida 5 de Julho. The other façade is on the Avenida Marginal and bears the inscription 1875; seen from the bay, the Clube Náutico is at left side of the Alfandega Velha (now culture centre); it is # 14 in location picture. The architecture is rather strange for a very dry tropical island. I would expect this roof in a country that snows or rains a lot.
The Clube Náutico is open to everybody; it has a bar and restaurant and, very often, singers and musicians play there. You can hear there good samples of Cape-Verdean music, often by fine undiscovered amateur talents, like those in the workshop (photographed in a different, private venue), but also other best known artists. If you volunteer yourself to sing or play, you are welcome too.
The military people and vehicles are not usual here. They are in the picture because during a few weeks in 2006, when the photo was taken, there was the NATO Steadfast Jaguar 2006 exercise, with troops from several countries, in some islands of Cape Verde. As you can imagine, the foreign troops have enjoyed very good times during their leave periods, in the Clube Náutico and other venues all over the island.
I made a workshop with a fake stamp using this shot.
