Photographer's Note

Mindelo is the only city of São Vicente Island, Cape Verde (a former Portuguese colony). The island was the last to be permanently settled, because it is very dry. However, its great natural harbor, the bay of the Porto Grande ("big port"), was used by pirates and foreign ships.
In 1795 was founded the first settlement by people from Fogo Island, establishing a village where it is now the Pracinha da Igreja; it was called Aldeia de Nossa Senhora da Luz, like the church now in that little square.
In 1819 the governor António Pusich brings more people from Santo Antão island, in order to develope a greater town. He changed the name to Vila Leopoldina, in honor of Maria Leopoldina of Austria, queen of Portugal for a while and empress of Brazil, wife of king Dom Pedro IV (also emperor Dom Pedro I of Brazil). Maria Leopoldina, also Archduchess of Austria, was the daughter of Francis II, Holy Roman Emperor. The highly cultured Leopoldina signed the Independence decree, declaring Brazil separated from Portugal, when Dom Pedro was away in São Paulo during a revolt.
In 1838 the Marquês of Sá da Bandeira changes the town's name to Mindelo, to honor the Landing of Mindelo and the Braves of Mindelo (in Northern Portugal), who were lead by Dom Pedro IV, on the way to victory in the Portuguese Civil War.
