Photographer's Note

The Cape-Verdeans living in the USA (more people than those in the islands) celebrate two Independence Days in a row: the United States 4th of July and the Cape Verde's 5 de Julho.
After five centuries ruled by Portugal, Cape Verde became an independent nation on the 5 th of July, 1975. The poorest of the Portuguese colonies, it had a challanging begining, but, against all odds, the country succeed, beneficing from the government's wise management of the resources and foreign aid. It is now among the few success stories of the African independences of the 60's and 70's. Cape Verde ranks now among the medium developed nations.
Here's a song written by Alcides Spencer Brito that celebrates Cinco de Julho, Independence Day. My free translation:

Labanta braço
Raise your hand
Bo grita bô liberdadi
Cry out your freedom
Grita povo independenti
Cry out independent people
Grita povo libertado
Cry liberated people
Cinco di Julho é sinónimo di liberdadi
Fifth of July means freedom
Cinco di Julho caminho aberto pa flicidadi
Fifth of July is a open way to happiness
Grita "viva Cabral"
Cry out "long life Cabral"*
Honra combatenti di nôs terra
Honor the freedom fighters of our country

* - Amílcar Cabral, assassinated before independence, he was the father of the nation. He could be as famous as Nelson Mandela.

This picture is last year's 5 de Julho eve, in Mindelo, São Vicente Island. The municipal government offered a free show, with artists from São Vicente and Santo Antão, in front of the palace and along the Rua de Lisboa.
