Photographer's Note

As I wrote in the note of Children of Praça Estrela, in Mindelo, São Vicente Island, this is kind of a forgotten counterpart of the more aristocratic Praça Nova.
Today you have here a larger view of Praça Estrela ("Star Square"), with the recent kiosks that the city established to accommodate some sellers (maybe inspired by the Praça de Espanha in Lisbon). I guess the business isn’t a great success here, but if you want to see old drawings or old pictures of Mindelo, go to Praça Estrela and have a look at them, copied to the azulejos panels on the kiosks walls. Azulejos are painted tiles (traditionally mostly in blue and white), much used in Portugal. Those in Mindelo’s Praça Estrela were made in Torres Novas, Portugal, and were an offer of Porto (Oporto) municipality to the city of Mindelo.
In one side of a kiosk there is also a sculpture and high relief (see workshop), made by local artists.
The mountain in background is Monte Verde, the highest in São Vicente Island.
Location in WikiMapia: 16.8836191, -24.9886608.
Other pictures with azulejos panels of these kiosks:
