The Alfândega Velha (the Old Customs House) of Mindelo was built in 1868-60 to serve the blooming trade through the Porto Grande of São Vicente Island. During the second half of the XIX century the Porto Grande (Great Port) became the most important trading entrepot of the islands of Cape Verde. The Alfândega is located on the Avenida Marginal (seaside boulevard) and the Cais Velho (see leo's Old Pier) is in front of it. After independence (1975) the Cape-Verdean authorities maintained and preserved the historic colonial heritage. Thus, in the façade of the Alfândega Velha there is still the Portuguese coat of arms, as well as inscriptions (workshop, Altered Image #2) about the constrution of the building, which I transcribe below. Nowadays the Alfândega Velha houses the Culture Centre of Mindelo. In the workshop Altered Image #1 there is another view of the façade.
Vista da Alfândega Velha do Porto Grande do Mindelo, ilha de São Vicente, o principal entreposto comercial das ilhas de Cabo Verde. Actualmente funciona aqui o Centro Cultural do Mindelo. Na fachada (workshop, Altered Image #1) ainda se vê o brasão de Portugal, assim como duas placas com as inscrições (workshop, Altered Image #2) que transcrevo em baixo, com a ortografia da época.

No reinado do senhor D. Pedro V sendo Ministro da Marinha e do Ultramar o Visconde de Sá da Bandeira e Governador Geral da Província de Cabo Verde o Conselheiro Sebastião Lopes de Calheiros e Menezes foi approvada e mandada executar esta obra.
Começou em Setembro do anno de 1858 e terminou em Dezembro do anno de 1860, tendo sido projectada e dirigida pelo Capitão do Estado Maior do Exercito Januario Corrêa de Almeida, engenheiro civil e militar d'esta provincia.
