Photographer's Note

This is the main façade of the Mercado Municipal (municipal market) in the center of the city of Mindelo, São Vicente Island. The building was constructed before independence. Unlike some African countries, Cape Verde preserved relatively well its historic and cultural heritage. Therefore, in the façade of the Mercado Municipal there is still the old colonial coat of arms of the city. Please, see in the workshops the top of the façade and a detail of the coat of arms, made with painted tiles (azulejos).
This is in the Rua de Lisboa (“Lisbon Street”), the one that runs from the bay shore to the former Governor's Palace.

Fachada do Mercado Municipal do Mindelo, na Rua de Lisboa, ilha de São Vicente, Cabo Verde. Esta é a rua que vai da marginal até ao antigo Palácio do Governador. Ao contrário de outros países africanos, Cabo Verde perservou relativamente bem a herança histórica e cultural. Como se vê nos workshops, no topo da fachada foi mantido o antigo brasão colonial da cidade do Mindelo.

Olá Francisco,
gosto muito desta foto como exemplo da herança cultural tipica das antiguas colonias portuguesas.
Encontrei outro palácio como o de Mindelo nas islas de São Tomé e Príncipe.

Nice color and detail in this very neat municipal building. Cape Verde looks like a very tidy place; in spite of or perhaps because its lack of rain.

Depois de vermos o interior chegou a vez de podermos admirar a fachada do edifício. Bonita aruitectura colonial com muitas características portuguesas. E o brazão é lindo (pena a foto estar pouco nítida). Gosto muito da tua reportagem sobre Cabo Verde. estiveste lá de férias?

I remember this nice market well.A rich offer but not many locals can afford the goods.I show all my friends and colleagues my Cape Verde photos and hope some of them will visit this fantastic islands.
A good shot with nice deatails and a good contrast with the typical blue sky.

This outside photo of the Municipal market is very nice exaple of the everiday life architecture, inherited from the past and kept in excellent condition.

Olá Francisco,
Muito boa esta tua seqüência sobre o Mercado Municipal do Mindelo, as imagens são nítidas e com boa gestão de luz, tanto nas externas quanto nas fotos do interior do mercado.
Interessante o edifício cinza por fora e cor de rosa por dentro - uma agradável surpresa.
