Several persons have said that my photos of downtown Mindelo, São Vicente Island, Cape Verde, don't look like many poor cities in Africa. In fact, the centre of Mindelo is the less poor part of the city and it is as clean as many cities all over the world. However, I've shown already poorer areas of Mindelo, in the outskirts: Water supply in São Vicente (I) and Século 21 Tesquinha, or also Mãe d' Fidje. Anyway, despite the poverty, all those shots show a rather clean environment.
I've searched my files and I present today the worst view that I have from the poor outskirts of Mindelo, so that you can see that the city has not only fine places. Nevertheless, even in these worst places, there is some care to clean the streets and the poverty is not as blatant as in continental Africa. Furthermore, these shantytowns are safe, much more safe than in richer countries, such as Portugal or Brazil. If come here friendly, they are your friends. Just in case you or they are not sure, here you have a tip: if you come to the shantytown, enter the bar or local shop and pay a beer or other drink to the people you meet there; treat them as you'll treat your best friend. From then on, those who had a drink with you, they won't let anybody else hurt you; they will care for your well-being.

Várias pessoas disseram que as minhas fotos do centro do Mindelo, ilha de São Vicente, Cabo Verde, não se parecem com muitas cidades pobres em África. De facto, o centro (chamado Morada) do Mindelo é a parte menos pobre da cidade e é tão limpo como muitas cidades em todo o mundo. No entanto, eu já mostrei áreas mais pobres do Mindelo, nos arredores: Fornecimento de água em São Vicente (I) e Século 21 Tesquinha, ou também Mãe d' Fidje. De qualquer forma, apesar da pobreza, todas essas fotos mostram um ambiente relativamente limpo.
Procurei nos meus arquivos e apresento hoje a pior vista que tenho dos arredores pobres do Mindelo, de modo que vejam que a cidade não tem só lugares bonitos. No entanto, mesmo nestes piores lugares, há alguns cuidados para manter as ruas limpas e pobreza não é tão gritante como no continente africano. Além disso, estas favelas são seguras, muito mais seguras do que nos países mais ricos, como Portugal ou Brasil. Se vieres aqui amigavelmente, eles são teus amigos. Se tu ou eles não tiverem a certeza, aqui tens uma dica: se fores a uma zona destas, entra no bar ou na mercearia e paga uma cerveja ou outra bebida às pessoas estiverem por lá; trata-as como tratarias o teu melhor amigo. A partir de então, aqueles que tomaram uma bebida contigo não vão deixar ninguém fazer-te mal; eles irão cuidar do teu bem-estar.
Esta vista é algures na periferia norte da cidade.
