Baia das Gatas

Photographer's Note

This shot continues the approaching to the fishing landing of Baía das Gatas, São Vicente Island, in the series of Cape Verde Fishermen. The previous was a view far-off; the background here is roughly the same, but more to the right of the previous and in a different day. Here you see the sands of Praia do Norte and the village above. The spit of rocks between the boat and the background sands is the site where the Hungarian military had their desalinization plant and barracks during the NATO Steadfast Jaguar 2006 exercise.
You can compare this shot with my older photo Timeless Hardship. These traditional fishing boats use a sail that is made by the fishermen using "direct-recycled" materials, mostly used sacks of grains and the like.
This is not an area of big storms, but there are sad stories when the Cape Verde fishermen get lost in the ocean with these small boats. Some were lucky to reach the shores of Brazil and return home by other means. some were rescued by modern ships. Some were never found. That's the hard life of fishermen, like all over the world.
This boat has the name Samira; you can see it nearer to the shore in next post of the series.

Granda séries que tu tens deste POV, Francisco. Continuo a gostar muito destas fotos, com elementos contra a paisagem impressionante lá atrás. Aqui temos uma excelente inclusão do barco e a vista mais aproximada das casas. Bons detalhes no barco - dá para ver que a vela é feita tipo manta de retalhos. Muito bonita.

Very pleasant shot. the compsotion is very well balnaced and the exposure very interesting. The mountian in the back bathed with light and some mist is wonderful. Great jib.

Francisco, esta ta uma maravilha so. Gosto deste barco a vela simples a frente desta montanha enorme e de cores desaturadas. Da uma sensacao de 3 dimensoes muito boa. A posicao descentralizada deste barco esta muito boa, porem eu talvez teria colocado o ate um pouco mais a esquerda.

Que bela foto deste barco a vela de retalhos , gostei muito da paisagem de fundo especialmente das casinhas , a agua tem uma cor fantastica.

Nice contrast here between the foreground and the background. The foreground has good colors and sharpness: a nice sea color, a little sailing boat with an impressive sail whereas the background has more pale colors and a little blurred effect. I would just regret the sky really grey here.

You're right the coloured version is really nice too. But there is a sort of gry mask in the distance that we see more than in b&w version.
I've tried a WS on it.

This is a very good capture. The lighting and colors are great with nice sharpness and detail. Your composition is fine placing the boat slightly off center giving the photo direction.

Hi Francisco!
Thanks for this colored version.I rememebr me,walking at the shore in the distance.You placed this typical boat perfect in the frame and I like the colors and texture of the sea.
For my today`s post I had a look at all my about 1300 Cape Verde photos,but I found nothing worth to post from this place,where I stayed about 24 hours.
I`m thinking about visiting Cape Verde again next year,the southern islands.

Me gusta mucho esta foto, sabes, lo que la hace interesante, es la bruma de el mar le da un toque de antiguedad a la foto y al mismo tiempo belleza. Una de las cosas ma bonitas de estas foto son als casas al fondo del el cerro con la luz del el sol por un lado y la sombra de las nubes por el otro

Gosto especialmente desta. O barquito contrasta muito bem com o azul lindo do mar e ambos com o castanho e a aridez da terra. A névoa, de que aprendi a gostar com as tuas fotos acentua uma certa atmosfera de sonho, embora o WS do Jeanmarc tenha conseguido conservar essa atmosfera e ao mesmo tempo tornar a foto mais nítida e atractiva cromaticamente. Dá que pensar como é possível viver num sítio tão seco.
A compo está excelente.

A ligeira neblina que se vê no "background" torna a imagem mais interessante, não só porque salienta ainda mais a embarcação, mas tamb+em porque cria umas tonalidades suaves muito bonitas.

Gostei muito desta imagem, o barco e o mar muito nítidos e as montanhas e o lugarejo sob uma espécie de névoa ("smog"?), no background. Deu um bom impacto visual.

If not for your note I would think this a pleasure outing. The coastal scenery is stunning because it is sparsely vegetated, not in spite of the fact.

linda vista da costa árida e o contraste com o azul turquesa da água, muito bonita a forma da vela e bem colocados os pescadores. Há algum tempo apareceu na tv uma história destas, de pescadores de cabo verde resgatados aqui no BR.
