Photographer's Note

I'm going to do a series/theme on the Cape Verde Fishermen. Today's picture is the first of the new pictures, to show the approach of the traditional Baía das Gatas fisher boats to the shore.
The Baía das Gatas, on the north coast of São Vicente Island, is in fact two or three different small bays or inlets. Please see the workshop for location and explanation. The beach nearest to the village is surrounded by volcanic rock reefs (this picture), making the beach a natural swimming pool. The end of the other inlet, open to the sea, is the fishing landing, where the fishermen unload their catch and keep their boats.
In today's picture you see a part of the beach "natural swimming pool"; the foreground volcanic rocks are not completely black here because these are bathed by high tide seawater. At left there's a man on the rocks. Above the man you can spot, with difficulty, the profile of Santa Luzia Island. In the middle, at background, there are the volcanoes of Calhau (same São Vicente Island, connected by low ground). It's against this background that we see the fisher boats, usually not clearly, as you see on the other workshop.
