This is not Lebanon, fortunately, and the military convoy is not the withdrawal of Israeli troops.
As I mentioned in the note of the photo This is not Iraq, in June there was a NATO exercise (Steadfast Jaguar 2006) in Cape Verde. They made also some operations of charm, which included a run to raise money to help schools in São Vicente Island. The runner in the photo is one of the participants (from any of the NATO countries), the convoy is Latvian, and the standing soldier is French (in tropical uniform). This was near the end of the race and the vehicles shared the road with the athletes. Notice the dust on the cars, owing to the country off-road dryness.
For those, like myself, who think that military exercises shouldn’t happen and troops shouldn’t exist at all, I may already say that, unfortunately, that’s not the reality. So, I post this photo because it was an unusual event in Cape Verde, and I adhere to the TrekEarth intention of “photographs that teach us about the world”, both the beautiful and the ugly parts of our imperfect world.
By the way, fortunatelly, the Cape Verde islands is one of the few countries in the World where there was never a war. After 500 years of colonialism, it got independence without war, and it never had a coup d'État. Cape Verde is one of the few African countries without ethnic violence.
Isto não é o Líbano, felizmente, e o comboio militar não é a retirada israelita.
Como já referi na nota da foto This is not Iraq, em Junho a NATO realizou exercícios (Steadfast Jaguar 2006) em Cabo Verde. Executaram também algumas operações de charme, como uma corrida para angariação de dinheiro para ajudar escolas na ilha de São Vicente. O corredor na foto é um dos participantes (de um qualquer dos países da NATO), os veículos são da Letónia e o soldado ao lado é francês (em uniforme tropical). Isto é perto do fim da corrida e os veículos partilhavam a estrada com os atletas. Repara no pó em cima dos carros, devido à secura dos caminhos de terra da ilha.
Para aqueles que, como eu, acham que não devia haver exercícios militares nem sequer exércitos, posso desde já sublinhar que, infelizmente, essa não é a realidade. Assim, publico esta foto porque foi um acontecimento invulgar em Cabo Verde, e eu sigo o objectivo do TrekEarth de “mostrar fotos que nos ensinem sobre o mundo”, tanto os aspectos belos como os feios neste nosso mundo imperfeito.
Já agora, felizmente Cabo Verde é um dos poucos países do mundo onde nunca houve uma guerra. Após 500 anos de colonialismo tornou-se independente sem guerra no seu território e nunca teve sequer um golpe de estado. Cabo Verde é um dos raros países africanos sem violência étnica.
