Photographer's Note
We had done a round trip of the island of Sal. This island has not so much sightseeing, but some of them are very intesting. On the east coast is the small village Pedra de Lume known for its saltworks and here is an old volcano crater. The bottom of the crater is right below the sea level. So sea water infiltrates until in the crater. In the caldera the water evaporates and what remains is nothing any more but salt. This source of salt was exploited between the 18th and the 20th century in industrial form
To reach the caldera you had to go through a tunnel (plese have a look to the workshop) and then you could see this panorama.

Hallo Achim. Insgesamt sehenswert. Viele Grüße, Wolfgang.

Hello Achim,
A good capture of this fascinating and rather desolate landscape. I like the muted brown tones, which sit well under the pale blue sky. Very good sharpness.

Hi Achim,
Quite a special place, never heard of such salt producing volcano :) Desolation and oddity charms me here.
I've never been to Cape Verde, but I remember Sal island from a fun coincident. Ten years ago I visited South Africa, and from the airline magazine I read that South African Airlines (SAL) made a refuel stop at Sal on the way between Johannesburg and New York!

Hallo Achim,

Hi Achim,
The point of view takes my eyes toward the mountains which is giving depth to thge composition. It is also showing the details of the water in the crater and the equipment used to get the salt. The late afternoon light has a good effect on the colors. Have a nice day.

Ciao dear Achim,
interesting image, in which it is possible to appreciate the excellent depth of field and the perfect sharp. If we remove the water, seem to be on Mars the red planet!

Hi Achim: Interesting Crater and now becoming the source for salt. You have chosen a fine pov with details in the fg probably due to the mining activities. The hills and the sky make interesting ending point in the frame. Well done and best regards. Jusni

Bonjour Achim.
Ce paysage est des plus déroutants avec cette installation abandonnée et ces couleurs d'un autre monde. Les humains donnent l'échelle. Pas de végétation mais de l'eau c'est presque la lune !

Such a unique and evcative environment, coupling the caldera of the volcano with the salt evaporating ponds. The colour of the rocks and soil is so fine and warm and there is a great sense of silence and solitude. I've found a similar environment in our abandoned salt pans. The photo has a fine clarity and thanks to the industrial ruins a good depth too.

Donato

Hello Achim,
Beautiful and interesting photograph on these saltworks. The landscape is immense and one with the impression to be on another planet. The human presence gives a good scale. I like the ambient luminosity of the image. Good glance and thank you for the photograph in WS.

Hallo Achim,
This landscape is very peculiar, the volcano crater with the sea water that creates a lagoon, and men takes advantage to exploit its source of salt, forms a very interesting image.
You have managed very well the light and the colors.
Good work.

Hallo Achim!

Hi Achim !
I am doing a little virtual trip in some TE member friends' galleries, just to see if I hadn't missed anything interesting in the past.
I find this a very interesting post indeed.
--First the note explaining the formation of this salt lake in a crater situated below sea level! Quite incredible !
--Then the photo illustrating the note is really beautiful.
The browns and the blues suit each other very well, and the brown frame is just right.
The composition is great with thebarren land and the industrial installation in the foreground ; the blue lake and salt works in the middle ground ; and the elegant mounts in the bakground.
From your note, I take it they have stopped operating the works ! Not efficient enough any longer?
TFS and have a good week !
Kind regards.
Marie-Louise.
