Monte Leao.Originally named “Lhana” meaning flat when it was discovered in 1640, Sal Island was given its current name when a lagoon in a crater of an extinct volcano was discovered to produce salt after the rains. Sal island is 216 km2 of flat, arid, barren land, with only 4 small hills exceeding 100 m in height (Monte Grande 405 m, Morro Sal 309 m, Monte Leste 263 m and Monte Lećo 165 m).
