Off to Geography Class, a photo from Sal, Barlavento

Photographer's Note

Not really digging through my deep drawers, but returning just for a day to my first digital journey, to Cape Verde in 2006.

These are kids running across their schoolyard in Espargos on the island of Sal. On the wall is a map of their country off the African west coast. Sal is the yellow island in the upper right corner.

Espargos is the administrative centre of Sal. It doesn't have much to offer tourists, who prefer the beaches of Santa Maria on the southern tip of the island, but it's conveniently close to the international airport.

Hi Gert,
I like very much this photo very joyful and colored.
The wall which serves as set is extraordinary and the children's play is absolutely natural.
Beautiful light's management also.

Hello Gert,
I like this colorful and candid scene. It has action, and shows us what daily school life is like for these students. Of course I really like the geographic mural on the wall. Together with the national flag it is art and a great learning tool at the same time.

I particarly appreciate the red dress which burst out of the blue hues of the wall, and the genaral attitude of the children. I don't know what game they play, but it seems very serious for them.

Hi Gert, Good idea to show the map on the walls. There are quite many islands there and they are separate from each other. I didn't know that. Nice geography lesson.
Dynamical photo of the running kids . Gunnar will be pleased with teh shirts of the children;). Photo full of joy.

really the lesson of geography is going on after the class of Cape Verde.I like the existence of the passing by and running little children in the whole down part of the image, that add life in the scene.Well done.

A photo of great documentary value, the timing and the balance of the scene is beautiful with one entering the class and one running away from it..

blue and red, even her belt screams red..a pleasant slice of life.

A very good idea to paint he map on the wall here! The children provide a lot of fine colours to this capture and I like the boy to the right also. You have captured him in the air, right in the middle of a jump.

this one has a great graphic impact and I always enjoy that. I would be tempted to crop this for even greater graphical impact. However, I think I would be wrong and you are right at presenting this has a story.The playing of games,the geography lesson, that's what this is all about as you have rightly reasoned.

I`ve seen this building in december 2009 and the kids running and playing there.
Till now I know only the Barlavento islands in the north of this archipelago but some day I`ll vstit the solavento islands in the south.
A good daylifeshot,I) love the pose of this boy jumping down the stairs.

Hello Gert,
a very fine daily life picture, attractive and interesting. Your observation was superb and the arrangement you captured within the frame works in an amazing way. I like very much the sunshine, the movement and the bright colours. The contrast between light and shadow is strong but still well balanced. The children are playfully associated with the islands, the girl in the yellow T shirt is well placed in relation to the yellow island. One of my very favourite parts is the boy running around the corner. Congratulations and thank you!

I passed by sal island many times, because it is the check control of planes between brazil and europe. of course I never visited cape verde, despite I would like do this.
excellent view of the mural with the island, flag and the children playing in front of it.
