Boa Vista is a dry, desert island. The greatest part consists of stone desert and so called butte hills (left by erosion). The highest elevation is 387 m.

Sand dunes are found around most of the beaches. One big accumulation with no plants what so ever (apart from Deserto do Viana in the inland) is found at the lower end of Praia du Chave (the key beach). The main dune types found on Boa Vista are so called Barchan dunes, owing to the strong winds year round.
