Photographer's Note
I love desert landscapes, so my most favourite place on Boa Vista was Deserto de Viana (the Viana Desert). You can enjoy here picture perfect 50m high sand dunes, a landscape quite unique for all Cape Verde Islands. The whole Boa Vista Island is effectively a desert, but its beauty has its culmination in the Viana Desert, which is 5 km long and 1 km wide. This place itself would be sufficient for me to choose this island above all other in Cape Verde.
The Viana Desert is sometimes called an extension of the Sahara in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean and there is something literal about it, the sand to create the dunes has been brought here by the wind from Sahara.
I have enjoyed driving through the Viana Desert by quad. It had the advantage that I have experienced a lot of places, however being part of an organized tour, we made only one stop for taking photos, which was not enough for me. I would love to spend at least a half a day there.

Hello Mariusz,
With an organised tour, it is easy to get left behind, though on quads, that would be more difficult.
I, too, like this landscape of sand and sky.
The sand has lovely textures, like rippled fabric! The sunlight creates patches of light and shadows which we can interpret as the undulations!
Beautiful!
My warm regards,
Bev :-)

Hello Mariusz,
5 km long and 1 km wide ... Distances not to be afraid of getting hopelessly lost. But perhaps this desert was located very far from the inhabited world of Boa Vista.
Sometimes we also get Sahara sand during rain showers and wind coming from the south. But never so much and actually never white sand.
The dunes here really do consist of white sand. Very beautiful under the blue sky.
The ripples in the foreground make the photo wonderful.
Didn't anyone take a picture of you driving down a dune with the quad?
Best regards, Paul

a nice view of these white dunes, these curves in the sand are ever fabulous to see.
I am thinking what you will say when I begin to show the "two brazilian deserts", one with orange sands and another with white sand dunes mixed with thousands of lakes. anyway these posts are many months ahead, in the future.
take care

Hello Mariusz,
The shapes of the sand are wonderful and I like the play of lighter and darker areas a lot as well. The smooth low hill make it look like a sea of sand almost. Nice sky with some friendly clouds as well.

Hi Mariusz
ah...yes, the dreaded Tour - where taking photos is NEVER a real option for real photographers like you and I. We are never satisfied with the time allotted to us. this is quite opposite to the shipwreck photos :) Funny to see a desert on an island...really, its quite strange. wonderful photo though, especially with the bright slanted section, it makes it stand out, and gives our eyes something to initially go to. splendid
cheers

Hello Mariusz,
I love desert landscapes, too. Unfortunately I have not been to many sand deserts. This is a lovely scene.
