Photographer's Note

During my stay in Benin towards the end of a long journey to West Africa in 1981-1982 I spent a day in the capital city Porto Novo. It is situated on a hill overlooking a large lagoon, northeast of the commercial capital Cotonou.

Along the shore are small fishing-villages, close to the city but seeming very remote. As I was strolling around a couple of small boys offered me a short ride in their boat. Ever since I first scanned this photo years ago the white plate has annoyed me. It's easy to erase it, but my skills at digital surgery are not enough to give the boy a proper, functioning big toe, so I just left it like this.

You can see another photo from the lagoon in a workshop, as well as a few kids I met in the village.

All photos were scanned from Kodachrome slides.

Here is a larger version of the main upload.
