Photographer's Note

This is a view from the "Bairro dos Coqueirros" taken on the way to my office four years ago in Luanda, Angola. This is the "Cidade baixa", the historical part of the city where first portuguese settled in the early 15th century as one can see with these old houses.

It was a very poor area but I always liked walking around as the life was tremendous here with kids playing around, women carrying their heavy loads of water or clothes, the shouts of the "Peixeiras", these women selling fresh fishes or the discreet call of the "Kinguilas", the women offering you to change your dollars against few million Kwanza, the local currency.

At each corner, you would see either a bunch of kids running outside an incredibly destroyed house with bullet impacts from 1991, the day where a violence burst occured between the government and UNITA in the capital, or you would see an amazing bright four-wheel-drive. For instance, that's the only place where I ever saw a Hummer, that incredible US car worthing something like 200,000 USD. An incredible mix...

No cropping, level adjusted and USM applied.
