Photographer's Note

When I came to Algeria I was very much surprised about green valleys, rich soil and all but barren dry desert I expected. Nevertheless, this green face is true only in the valleys near Mediterranean Sea. More to the south true deserts start.... and apparently never end. The picture shows a beautiful valley behind, that is below south flanks, away of the sea shore, of Djurdjura Mountains south-east of the capital Alger, which snow capped mountain peaks give a nice background to green fields and olive trees in the valley bottom. After one sees that it is not difficult to believe that north shores of Africa have really been culturally highly developed in the history.

Scanned by Nikon CoolScan ED VI. Cropped slightly and resampled to 800 pix width, Curves to adjust contrast and tonal gradation. Sky masked using Magic Wand mask tool and blurred 1 pix radius. Mask inverted. Sharpened using Unsharp Mask tool, level 56, 1 pix radius. JPEG level 30 (Corel PhotoPaint notation).
