Photographer's Note

The building belongs the Portuguese Society of Kindness (founded in 1º of June of 1870). One of the beautiful and oldest constructions of Bagé, was built for be a hospital destined it attend Portugueses of the region, in land donated by the province. It was inaugurated in 27 of November of 1878, but did not begin it function with the initial purpose; was rented for the National Army for shelter the Military Ward (1893 to 1898). In 1894, a fire destroyed several documents, as statutes and plants of the building. The building is similar to the Palace of Queluz, in Portugal, where was born and died Dom Pedro I. due to the financial difficulties, the buildings of the institutions assistenciais many times began it to be built in a style and were concluded in another. This building I possessed colonial architecture (windows), classical (facade) and baroque (gate of entrance). Exists in the building, in the end of the flight of stairs, a bust of Luis Vaz de Camões. Had several uses during the past century. After 1914, it passed it function like institution assistencial hospital to the Portugueses (initial purpose). Functioned also as Hospital, from 1921. In 1940, it come back to the soldier, serving of barracks and afterwards hospital, by more 10 years. In 1952 it was inaugurated the Hospital Dr. Candido Gaffré, functioning until 1968. In 22 of March of 1975 was transfered for the building (after this to have been restored by the town) the Museum Dom Diogo de Souza. Belonging to the Urcamp, the Museum has a collection with more of 2.000 works that portray the history of Bagé and of the region, as clothing, personal objects, articles of home (like lights and china) and furniture. Count still with two hemerotecas (collections of newspapers) and two fototecas (containing 15.000 historical pictures). At present, the building passes for reforms and most of the collection is guarded.
