Great Energysavingelk 2021-08-04 0:42

Hello Ian!

You remind me that there is still a radio telescope on my to-do-list: Effelsberg telescope inside an Eifel valley, with a 100 m diameter, just 50 kms from here.
Unfortunately, the LOFAR array at Effelsberg was damaged by the recent floodings, and the common roads to access Effelsberg seem not available. The present number of victims is 139, and very much infrastructure has completely disappeared.
I understand this one has a diameter of 64 m and used to be the largest radio telescope of the southern hemisphere then. Valuable document, despite a sky like lead.

Regards from Rhineland
Sven

Talking To Energysavingelk: Effelsberg

Hello Sven (and Ian), Haven't you been to Effelsberg? I was there 40 years ago, It is very impressive, for many years it was the largest fully steerable radio telescope on Earth, surpassing the Lovell Telescope in the UK. Now Green Bank is slightly larger. Bad Munstereifel is also a nice small city, well worth visiting. Unfortunately, it suffered in the recent flood. Best regards MAlgo
