Hi Gert
I don't want to get too far off topic here, but I always question these "EXPLORERS". They're often looked upon with great admiration, but in reality they're concurrers, they often force locals to join their religion or face consequences such as slavery or death. Look at history...its ALL OVER the place. Take a look at the first 'explorers' who landed on Easter Island - Portuguese I believe? Not to mention Christopher Columbus and his murderous/slavery type ways.
I honestly do knot know about this Diogo Afonso, i'll have to research him in great detail to find out.
anyways, enough about that...but I do encourage others to research the real truths about these explorer. Its often not a positive one.
I was trying to guess the age of this photo, i was going to guess the 1980's...i was very wrong. The boat and the colourful boats in the water make for excellent subjects. The statue facing the opposite direction is wonderful, especially with the hands on the hip look. fine post
cheers

Thanks Craig,
Let me assure you I am not as unaware of colonial history as you may think. But the fact seems to have been that the Cape Verde islands were actually uninhabited when Portuguese seafarers and "explorers" found them in the 15th century. Then of course they brought slaves from mainland Africa to work on the plantations the Portuguese started... Of course history is full of white supremacists killing "coloured" people by the hundreds of thousands for profit, destroying age old cultures, but in Cape Verde oppression didn't start right away. That statue was most likely erected while the islands were still a Portuguese colony. What may be surprising is that it hasn't been pulled down afterwards. But I guess they admit that this Diogo Afonso wasn't personally responsible for anything. And they've had better things to do, like building one of the best functioning states in all of Africa, with very few means. Have a nice rest of the week, Gert |
