Great delpeoples 2014-02-21 2:41

Dear Chris

It's a magnificent place, aint it? And yes it's huge, but Italy is so bankrupt, they're not maintaining this precious treasure nearly well enough. The Gladiators' Hut fell down about a year ago, never to be resurrected. Anyway, a great photo which demonstrates just how close Il Gigante (The Vesuvius) is to the towns of Pompei and Castellammare. Beautiful vivid colours and a great sense of scale. Did you know that the force of the explosion actually changed the course of the nearby River Sarno? It leaves me breathless to think about it - and about what it will do when it next goes up.

I've read that the volcanic Campi Flegrei / Phlegraean Fields caldera much closer to Napoli, are a much bigger potential threat than Vesuvius itself.

It last erupted 35,000 to 39,000 years ago, although there was a major, but not catastrophic eruption, in 1538. Hope it does not erupt again any time soon.
