Great KristinsCamera 2013-08-02 21:15

Too bad you won't find ice crystals like this in Austin, Russ, for this is really a beautiful shot. The patterns are a like an old lace tablecloth, yet the hues of the sunrise coming through them is very contemporary. Really a lovely shot!

Warm regards,

Smile To KristinsCamera: Thank you!

This is one that I will confess went through countless PP iterations, not to change the content or color very much, but to see how various techniques served to bring out the shape of the crystals. In the end, the "winning" method was repeated passes using the "Unsharp Mask" sharpening tool. Typically, I avoid using the same process more than once on an image, as noise and other artifacts will compound themselves and you quickly wind up with an image that does not resemble a photograph. But the semi-abstract nature of this shot withstood it well. The other issue was plain old resolution -- this is a crop of about a quarter of a 35mm frame, so we were getting down to pixels pretty quickly. Again, the abstractness of the background allowed more leeway than a sharper shot would have. There was also some dodging of highlights and burning of shadows and dialing up the contrast, all in the name of showing that "old lace tablecloth" that Mother Nature draped on the window that morning.

And I want to thank you again for the kind compliment on the shot, but disagree that it's "too bad" I won't find these here -- cold winter really is... why I left Kansas!
