Hi Simon, Thanks very much for your comments on my latest uploaded image.. I was looking thru your gallery and really like the depth and colours you have achieved on this image. I was down in Wales over the Christmas break and tried a few long exposure shots of rivers, but did noit seem to get the colours and depth. The Viaduct adds a new perspective. I woul;d be keen to hear from you on the difference the filters make. Look forward to hearing from you. Rich

Default To Ricx: Re: Filters

Hi Rich. Thanks for the comments, much appreciated. The filters made a big difference. It was quite dark down between the high sides of this gully, and despite the sky being very dull and grey it was still quite bright. Adding the grad filter across the upper section of the composition allowed me to drop the balance the exposure of the gully and the sky. This still left the rock in the forground as being too bright in comparison to the other rocks and the sides of the gully, so I used a another grad filter inverted on the bottom section. This seemed to balance the exposure (to my eyes anyway). I guess I could have cropped the sky out completely, but felt that I needed some sky above the viaduct - again, personal choice.

I included the polarizing filter to minimise reflections off the water and try and see some of the detail below the surface in the foreground.

The grads were Cokin P filters ( and I used a Hama Circular Polarizer.
