Default Transforming a color photo into B&W with Photoshop CS3

Hello,

I'm new with photoshop. Is there a simple way to transform a color photo into B&W with the CS3?

Thank you and see you all around
Nuno

Hello,
The simplest way is to use the desaturation tool (I hope that's the correct word in the english version...), just low the saturation to the minimum and you're gonna have a B&W photo.
It's simple but I was told that is nore the only one, nore the best one ! :) But the only one I know !!!
Regards,
Marion

Bonjour Nuno & Marion,
I'm working with the more simple version, PS Elements and there you can open Image, then under in that little window choose Mode or modus, and then click on Grey values and then you can find the question if you want to erase all the colour informations.
Is it only on PS Elements ?

Hi Nuno.

I find the best way is to go Image>Adjustments>Channel Mixer then tick the monochrome box. You can then use the slders to play around with the 'filters' so that you can create the effect you want.

Increasing red makes the sky darket and clouds stand out, increasing blue, makes the sky lighter, yellow makes the grass lighter...have a play and see what you come up with. The only 'rule' is that, whatever you decide on, you should keep the totals at 100. If you don't, the image will degrade.

Have fun.

Regards,

Paul.

There is a way that allows to do it without the expensive CS3 and its excellent channel mixer.

1.- Create a "hue/saturation" layer on top of the photo. Move the "hue" slider somewhere!
2.- Create a second same layer and desaturate totally.
3.- In the "mode" menu, put the second layer in "colour" mode.
4.- Go back to the first "h/s" layer and move the "hue" slider until the BW picture looks satisfying.
5.- Use the levels or "dodge/burn" (or both) to improve your image locally.

Hope this helps!
Olivier
