Hello Beverley,
Both pictures could have been excellent main uploads.
I like the beautiful lines of clouds in the sky on the photo in the WS.
Do you really think what we see on the huge stone on the foreground here are only the effects of weathering?
I thought that wind and weather over the years have obscured the carvings.
A very extraordinary place.
Best regards, Paul

Thank you for your critique, Paul.
These sort of prehistoric monuments will, I think, always interest and confuse us. We make educated suppositions about their purpose but there are no written records to confirm what we believe to be true. I have been round this monument and I have read about about it. I had an interesting book, with photographs, which intrigued me long before we actually went. I have never seen or read references to any carvings being found in the stone circles. There was reference to a couple of stones having very shiny surfaces, which were believed to have been used for sharpening stone axes. Did you look at the reference to 'Avebury Then'. It shows how the stone circles and ditches would have looked when initially built. Kind regards, Bev :-) |
