Default Filters for the A30-A40

I currently own a Canon A30 camera, and I'm thinking about buying the lens adapter kit and some filters to extend its capabilities while I save for a more powerful model

- Is that a good idea? Has anyone tried filters with the PowerShot A* series?

- Will filters really improve my lighting problems? (My skies tend to be overexposed and I have a hard time with very bright illumination; I have a feeling a polarizer filter would help me but maybe I'm mistaken)

- Are 57 mm filters standard? Will I be able to use them again with another camera?

- Anything else I should know about filters before I start shopping?

Correction: the adapter fits 52mm screw-on filters, not 57. Can you tell I know nothing about filters?
