Great Royaldevon 2020-08-06 5:24

Hello Jorge,

This is a lovely building and doesn't seem to reflect that sad usage that it has suffered.
I wonder if the ramparts were there to prevent the unhappy women from trying to escape their prison/nun status!
I like how the attractive, white building of arches and towers, is given such a contrast by being framed by the dark conifer trees.

My warm regards,
Bev :-)

Default To Royaldevon: monastery

bev

there are other monastery in the city and all of them are surrounded by ramparts, even the masculine ones. it was a way to present invaders during the wars and, at same time, prevent the people outside had contact with the religious living inside. even if those women escaped from there they wouldn't have a way to survive in another place.

take care

jorge
