Hello Paul,
For strange reasons I can't remember seeing this palace. I don't understand why, since it was already built when I was there. ;-) This is clearly the best and most interesting of the three photos. It's very well composed with white columns framing the view and a family seated in the middle. 50 years ago the man would also have been traditionally dressed.

Even more: the palace had also already been destroyed when you were there

It was mentioned in my guide book as very last item of what there was to see in Madurai and that without calling it a must.
Since it wasn't far away from the Meenakshi Temple I decided to visit it. I found it incredibly impressive and for me it was after the just mentioned temple the second reason to go to Madurai.
Other westerners had also found their way to it. But the majority of visitors were Indian.
