first, be careful not to tilt the horizon, and try different off centered compositions, (the boat not at the center)

be careful with these situations in which you have a high contrast (sun and shadows)

if you have high contrast...USE IT! take advantage of it, capture a nice silhouette or something within the frame, avoid big shadowed areas (which are boring), and try to use the complete frame to remmark something interesting,
