Hello Jorge,

Well well well! A photo from Wells! Its a shame that the pigeon mess hasn't been cleaned since Margaret Thatcher was pm, but never mind, that's not your fault. Some places in Europe have netting and sharp spikes to dissuade the birds. The arms need repairs as well. This problem of restoration is by no means unique to the UK. France also has many cathedrals and castles in urgent need of repairs, even the Notre Dame in Paris! Tfs!

Default To ChrisJ: wells

many of these sculptures were destroyed during civil war by cromwell's soldiers who used the sculptures as a target. pigeons aren't the only to produce damages in the monuments.

take care

Default Damage

Hi Jorge

That makes sense because the Protestant Anglican Church championed by Cromwell was iconoclastic much like Muslims today. Even today there is only 1 statue of Jesus in Westminster Cathedral and no frescoes or any other statues. It wasn't until later after Cromwell, in the 17th century, during the age of Enlightenment and the Reformation, that there was separation of power between church and state.
