Great mcmtanyel 2016-04-20 19:01

Hello Lars,
It is indeed a beautiful impressionistic painting. The presence of the leaves adds even more beauty to the photo.
I have a question about your note. If Amsterdam is not the seat of government nor houses the parliament, why is it called the capital? Is that where the queen lives?

Default To mcmtanyel: Amsterdam/The Hague

Hello Murat,

According to the constitution Amsterdam is the capital and the city where the King is to be sworn in. During the time of the King of Holland (1808-1810), Amsterdam was the city where King Louis Napoleon lived (in the Royal Palace, which actually used to be the City Hall of Amsterdam) and he declared the city capital. The Hague has been the seat of goverment, all other heads of state and the Supreme Court for centuries, though. On the other hand, Amsterdam is the largest city and has been the most important city in the country both economically and culturally for ages.

Best wishes,
