Hello paolo,
It's an interesting shot to know about Japan.
I think it is not a joke. They should be serious at all. Their conscience will bother them without it. It is based on the Buddhistic tradition that prohibit the killing of animals....

Honestly, as a Japanese man, I can't undetstand why so many people consider that it's a joke!

My pappou was from Cyprus from a small chorio called Polystipos near Troodos mountains. Both my parents were born there but migrated to Australia in the 60's. Your photo is just superb!!! All the best
