Great macjake 2019-11-04 15:56

Hi Gert
I want to go here SO bad, perhaps one day, but its so touristy now. In your shots, it looks like you have the entire place to yourself, the complete opposite. and the site looks so rustic, now in photos that I see it looks so pristine. hmmmm...makes me wonder. you mentioned how it must be easy to defend bc of the steepness, but i suppose not if its been conquered a few times in the past - at least someone was successful in their attempts. I'd like to know more about your personal experience...I know you mentioned taking the bus here...but what else. Today i'm sure you can book an online tour in 5 min. I get the feeling that wasn't the case when you went :) and again, it looks SOOO much more run down and decayed compared to today's photos, i wonder if its been restored. Petra is quickly becoming a SELFIE Favourite, a SELFIE heaven, which is too bad. It would be curious to know how isolated you were here, or were there many tourists? great shots...Petra is really high up on my list but the distance is SOOO far away from Western Canada...sigh. awesome shots
cheers
Craig

Hi Craig

The modern town of Petra is only a few kilometres from Petra archaeology site & has a mini bus station and many hotels. I chose a mid range place near the mini bus station for about $65 a night, but there are 5 star and 4 star hotels available if you want to pay 200 USD a night or more. It might have been the Seven Wonders Hotel. Some useful websites

Petra is about half way between Amman and Wadi Rum, both worth seeing. There are several medieval 'crusader' forts between Petra and Amman but a Canadian woman was killed in a terrorist attack at Karak in December 2016. I was there in July 2016. Maybe choose Jerash instead if it's still uncertain when you get there. Enjoy. The 'humus' served with most meals is like French Mustard.

Hi Craig,
I see that Chris has already kindly provided you with all the necessary information about seeing Petra today. I have nothing to add, since my experience is 24 years old.
Obviously it was not impossible to conquer Petra, but it existed for more than 600 years before the much stronger and better armed Romans took it. That's not so bad.
Cheers,
Gert
