Thank you Paul,
The animal in the cage was definitely a bird, but I have no idea what kind. Maybe a canary, maybe a goldfinch. Caged birds were very common outside shops or tea-houses, usually of the kinds that would sing nicely. I can't tell the ethnicity of the man with the skull cap. Afghanistan has such a mix of people from various parts of Central Asia, although I don't recall reading about Uyghurs. Maybe he was a Turkmen, in which case he was close to his homeland, maybe an Uzbek. Both are Turkish peoples and thus related to Uyghurs. Have a nice weekend, Gert
