Default Canon 40D, Canon 5D or wait for Nikon D300....

Hi, my Nikon D200 was stolen few weeks before. I am planning to buy a new DSLR, but can't decide which one to choose...Canon 40D is available and is cheaper than D300 which is still not in the market. As all my lenses were stolen, so I can move to Canon too. I need your advice to make up my mind. Also please suggest what lenses I should buy. Will be thankful for making my mind. Regards, Vivek

If you are a painter with light, you go canon, if you are a documentarist sharp to reality you stand by nikon.
If canon, then the 5D is still better in the high iso's then the 40D, a bit slower in focussing though.
Two most important things on photography is screen and lens, for lens a 16-35 at F2,8 is a most satisfying all rounder.

And indeed don't loose your tools out of sight !

Thanks Henk!I too was thinking of Canon 5d as the price for 5D is going down. Canon 5D is full frame...will it be fine for portraits? I love to shoot portraits and what lens shall I buy if I go for Canon 5D? For landscape I think 5D is the best deal for the price and 16-35 at F2.8 is excellent combination.

for portraits including the environment the 16-35 will do perfect but if you like an OOF background then a 85 or even 100 will give a shorter DOF ... your choice then for a fix or zoom, I do that with the rather heavy 70-200, not that advisable for travel :)

All I read from people havind made the nikon to Canon switch, is that Canon is best for low-light photography with primes, or the primes are better. Whatever that means, just passing it on, it's easy to go to the Fred Miranda forum or DP review and spend 3 days and night cutting hairs over it with others. I sense money might not be a problem, why not Leica M8?

Well I did something the others may not have done, and I actually looked at your portfolio - you have a liking for close cropped portrait with a sea of bokeh behind, and that leaves out the M8 pretty much. So for YOUR style of picture taking, the M8 makes little sense.
Again looking at your work, I'd say you are a lyrical sort, Vivek, and that leaves Nikon out (trust me!) Nikon is about as romantic as a mother-in-law (oops!)
Okay so we're down to Canon. Buying the 5D now may sound like a bargain but it'S more than 2 years old, has sub-standard AF (my own personal and painful experience) and is about to be replaced by something much better in a few months, the 5D II. If you are set on full frame, wait a few months for that.
Otherwise the 40D is a splendid, wonderful instrument, Vivek (I use it now). Lightning fast with an AF that BITES! Image quality that is cloooose to the 5D with a remarkably high DR (dynamic range). You could do far worse than go with the 40D, right now.
Lenses?
Two:
The peerless 17-40 F4L for just about everything
The 85mm f1.8 for superb portraits, at night too...

Everytime Francis give us his opinionm he forgets to mention Olympus and Sigma! Not that i would buy either!

Ken Rockwell likes his 16-35mm and 70-200 f4 IS combo. He's the MAN to listen to on matters like this methinks.
