Default Again: The dilema Canon 30D vs 400D

I have sold my 350D. Originally I was thinking of getting a 400D, but I was also thinking of getting the 30D, or as people here advised me, wait for the substitute of the 30D (the 40D).

So now, that the PMA trade show is over. There does not seem to be any anouncements for a a 40D. Since I dont want to be too long without a camera, what should I do?

Should I buy a 400D (which is cheaper than the 30D) while I wait for the 40D to arrive?

Or is it worth it to buy the 30D right away, in spite of the chance that a new improved model will come out shortly?

It does bother me that the 30D is at 8 Mpixels and does not have auto cleaning.

YOur advise is greatly appreciated.

Regards

Daniel

he he another one disappointed by the non announcement of the 40D...
no 40D for us Daniel means for me keeping my 350D until it eventually appears, for you a 30D would not be a bad option now with immediate availability and still up to the level techs, 8 Mpix only gets relevant at A3+ size, do you often print pictures at A3+ size ?
The auto cleaning does not seem to work so well and is more of a marketing thing to have because others have it, it will not replace the sensor swab !

With what you are saying, I think I may be more tempted to buy the 400D then (I can get it cheaper in the US if I visit my parents) and then I wont lose that much if one year later I decide to buy the 40D, whereas buying a 30D to change it for a 40D might be kind of foolish.
What do you think?

By the way, what exactlyu is the sensor swab and were do you get it?

sensor swab is a captor cleaning product that is sold by some internet dealers and that I found easy to use, although it is not exactly cheap...

as a long time investment alternative you have the 1D MkIII ... if you sell a handful of A380s you'll get the funds ;-)

Sadly, unlike other trekearthers, I have no expensive vices (cigarettes) or expenses (cars) to cut into in order to finance such a purchase.........
Therefore I think I am going to keep it at the 400D for the time being and wait patiently for the 40D to arrive....

I'm coming a bit late...
My understanding of things is that the 30D is better camera than the 350D, but the image quality might not be that different (High ISO excepted...)
With the 400d in the game, appart from the better construction of the 30d, I don't know why one wouldn't choose the 400D.
I haven't tried the 400D though and have less experience than both of you... But that's the way I feel.
Let's hope that the 40D (?) will be more of a change than 20D => 30D and that it will have some nice features and will be cheap and... and... let's hope ;-)

If it's any consolation, I'm in a similar situation - I'm still shooting with a 10d and with a big trip coming up at the end of the month was really hoping to upgrade beforehand.

I still can't make up my mind either. For me the 30d isn't a big enough upgrade, but the 400d probably is.

I think I have a strong idea of what the 40d will bring, but since it's unlikely they'll launch it until September... 10MP seems a given (as 400d and 1d3 are), anti dust is a given too (again both 400d and 1d3 have it), I guess it'll have ISO3200 (slotting between 1600/400D and 6400/1D3), and I suspect it'll still be 5fps (as the 30d). A new AF engine would seem logical, as they imported the old 30D engine into the 400d.

My big question is, live view - yes or no? If it doesn't have live view, then the 400d will do almost everything, and cost half the price - so unless they have something really interesting hidden up their sleeves the 400d is the best choice. I just wish they'd announced the 40d at PMA as I'd expected...

Salut Daniel
Bonne chance.
