Default Re: Locations: Gibraltar

Hi Kari,

Thanks for letting me know. BTW, I just learned that Gibraltar isn't Spanish but is British territory!

I changed the locations in the United Kingdom into three 'places':
- Gibraltar (the city)
- Rock of Gibraltar
- Bay of Gibraltar

I'm wondering if I should merge them all, as you said. I would do it too (as rock and bay of gibraltar aren't cities), but I will ask Adam to be sure. In other countries as well some places aren't cities, but are left like that because you can't really merge them with cities (for example the Cordillera Blanca in Peru, or Yosemite National Park in California, USA)

Unfortunately, I'm not able to move cities from one country to another, so I will also ask Adam to do this.

Greetings,
ThomasL

Actually the admins ARE doing something about it . . . . I made a proposal to clean up part of Latvia, and it was done :) . . . I guess the problem is that they are short of hands . . . what I understand is that there was an idea to make a page where you could report a problem . . . but that was already some time ago. . . .

Correct: United Kingdom >> Other >> Gibraltar >> Gibraltar
Merge all other 'cities' under United Kingdom >> Other >> Gibraltar to it, as
in all fairness there is only one town over there.

Also Spain >> Andalucia >> Cadiz >> Gibraltar and
Germany >> West >> Bayern >> Gibraltar should be
United Kingdom >> Other >> Gibraltar >> Gibraltar

OK the changes have been made ;) Thanks for letting me know!

Thomas,

I sent in an email about the lack of a grand canyon in Colorado. There are pictures categorized as GC, CO. Grand Canyon is large if not massive, but it does not reach all the way to Colorado.

Why not have a function that lets users report incorrect categorizations. That would make many users correct their own mistakes and it would help you find imagesthat someone thinks are incorrectly categorized.

It would also be good to have multiple categorizations, such as allowing a picture to be from GC in a national park at the same time as it is in GC, AZ. I know it is not for you to make those changes, but you may have more to say about such things than the average user.

Hi Mathias,

"There are pictures categorized as GC, CO. Grand Canyon is large if not massive, but it does not reach all the way to Colorado."

Probably people are confused and think:'The river which runs through the Grand Canyon is the Colorado river so the GC is situated in Colorado...'

"Why not have a function that lets users report incorrect categorizations. That would make many users correct their own mistakes and it would help you find imagesthat someone thinks are incorrectly categorized."

Many of us already suggested some changes, and they're working on it. But it's not as easy as it seems ;) As for the function you suggest, it actually exists. Next to each pic you can click on 'Report Problem', then mark 'Location', and give a description of the change(s) to be made.

"It would also be good to have multiple categorizations, such as allowing a picture to be from GC in a national park at the same time as it is in GC, AZ. I know it is not for you to make those changes, but you may have more to say about such things than the average user."

I already asked Adam what to do with National Parks, beaches, canyons, and other kinds of 'sites'. He said the following: "As for cities, it doesn't have to be a city. Something like a NP isfine. A beach can go either way, if it's really popular it can beseparate, otherwise it can be placed in the city/town where it islocated. If the place has only one city etc, it might be better toplace it separately to make it easier to browse."
So I personally think in this case only 'Grand Canyon National Park' should exist, as it's the most complete name between 'Grand Canyon' and 'Grand Canyon National Park'.

Hope this helps! I will look for multiple 'Grand Canyon-locations' (wrong spelling/wrong state/...) and try to fix the problem.

Kind regards,
ThomasL

Default Featured locations: Namibia

Thanks for sorting out Gibraltar. Now to a more tricky country:

Featured destinations:

Correct:
Hardap >> Dead Vlei

Merge to above:
Hardap >> Deadvlei
Hardap >> Deathvlei
Hardap >> sou
Karas >> Deadvlei
Karas >> Sesriem
Omaheke >> Dead vlei

Correct:
Hardap >> Sossusvlei

Merge to above:
Hardap >> sossuslvei
Hardap >> Sossuvlei
Hardap >> Sousseslvlei
Hardap >> Soussesvlei
Hardap >> Soussousvlei
Hardap >> Soussuvlei
Hardap >> Seisrim
Erongo >> Sossusvlei
Khomas >> Sesriem
Khomas >> Sossuvlei
Khomas >> sousslevlei
Kunene >> Sossusvlei
Ohangwena >> Sossusvlei
Oshana >> Sesriem

Correct:
Erongo >> Swakopmund

Merge to above:
Erongo >> Swakopmud
Hardap >> Swakopmund
Karas >> Swakopmund
Omaheke >> Swakopmund
caprivi >> swakopmund
Kunene >> Swakopmund
Kunene >> Swakobmund

Correct:
Erongo >> Walvis Bay

Merge to above:
Erongo >> Walvis-Bay
Karas >> Walvis Bay
Ohangwena >> Walvis Bay
Oshikoto >> Walvis BAY

Correct:
Khomas >> Windhoek

Merge to above:
Ohangwena >> windhoek

Then the question of Etosha National Park. Etosha is so big that it actually spans three regions: Omusati, Oshana and Oshikoto. My suggestion is to keep
Oshana >> Etosha National Park and merge Oshana >> Etosha and Oshana >> Etosha N.P to it.
Most of the public routes, campsites and the Etosha Pan are however within the region of Oshikoto.
So I suggest renaming Oshikoto >> Etosha to Oshikoto >> Etosha National Park.
And merge these to it:
Otjozondjupa >> Etosha
Erongo >> Etosha
Kunene >> Etosha
Kunene >> Etosha National Park
Okavango >> Etosha
Otjozondjupa >> Etosha National Park
Oshikoto >> Etosha NP
Oshikoto >> Etosha Pan

I might get back to this mess later.

Thanks a lot Kari!

I checked what you asked for and made the changes. You were right about the Etosha National Park, so I followed your suggestions.

Kind regards,
ThomasL

PS: Don't hesisate to ask me for other changes to be made (however I'll be quite busy with university the following weeks! :P)

Thanks Thomas,
Namibia gallery is now much more reliable what comes to regional information.
I may some day go through individual pictures too and suggest corrections where location is recognizable from the picture or text.
