Default Canon EOS 400D or Nikon D40x or Olympus E410

Hi Friends,

I am about to buy my first DSLR. After going through whatever information I had and also looking at my budget, I have shortlisted on these three cameras....

1. Canon EOS400D
2. Nikon D40x
3. Olympus E410

Please tell me which one is the best one. I have been using Canon A510 point and shoot camera so far. In case there is some other option which is better, please telkl me.
I thank you all in advance.
Regards,

Hemant

I would suggest going to the store and trying them all yourself. Personally, I would either go with Nikon or Canon, but Olympus does have some advantages. I've used the 400D and the D40X (not the E410) and I don't think any one of them is a bad choice. I'm not sure what knid of budget you're on but the kit lens that comes with the D40X is excellent. In general, I think most say it is better than the Canon. But, the D40X can only use "DX" lenses whaeras the Canon can use pretty much all the Canon lenses made.

I think your best bet is to go to the store and try all three, see which one you like most.

The D40X (and D40) can only use AF-S because there is no autofocus motor in the camera.
You can use AF-S even the full frame design (know as FX since 15 days) and also the APS design (DX)

are you suggesting D40X doesnt have an auto focus and Canon has it?

No, both have an autofocus device but autofocus can be activated with 2 different device :
Motor on the lens (Canon USM)or (Nikon AF-S)
Motor on the camera (Canon non USM) or (Nikon AF, AF-D).
400D support the 2 mechanism and can accept all the Canon lens range
D40, D40X support only AF-S lens (not all the Nikon range). D80 sipport all the range. But it's not very important because all new lens shall be AF-S.

I have a Nikon D70 and an Olympus E410.
The advantage of the Olympus is the size and wight. In general I think I will use this camera with the 2 kit lenses when travelling. On the negative side: The light metering is not as good as with the Nikon i.e. grey light sky will often come out whitewashed unless you underexposure your photos.
The D70 have a better overall tech imo.
As the D40 is quite smaller than the D70 - I think this would be my recommandation.

Well, Hemant... I was in the same boat and have been following your question. In the end I took, Canon EOS 400D. Well, there isnt much to differentiate between the D40X and EOS 400D, I felt. The former has spot metering and captured colour better than EOS 400D in jpeg mode while the latter is slightly a better performer in lowlight. (PS: This is my observation from research I have been doing).

And then ofcourse,D40X doesnt have that lens motor in the body. Its importance need not be slighted if the lens price will be a consideration for you. There are not many Sigma lenses with AF-S, I read somewhere. And no Tamrons. So you will have to invest heavily on AF-S Nikkor lenses.

The D40 (x) goal of Nikon is to offer the best possibility with especially two lens the 18-70 of the kit and the new zoom 55-200 (VR as option). There are both AF-S with low cost! Most of people interested with the D40 range (a low cost) are not interested with lens which cost three to ten the cost of the camera. So in most of case it's not a problem with the internal motor of the camera.
Both Canon and Canon are very good.

Note on Sigma:

I know their 10-22 works and they just anounced the 18-50 2.8 & 18-70 2.8-4.5 in HSM (although not avaiable yet).

HSM basically means in will work on the D40/D40x - has an internal motor.

Thekit lens on the D40 is the 18-55...not the 18-70...normally. You may find some places that offer the 18-70 though.
