Of course they were functional buildings in their day. The Jordanian Dinar has been tied to the US dollar for the past decade so it's a bit more expensive than other Middle Eastern countries, but so worth it. The Nabataean Arabs inhabited the city from the 4th century BC until the earthquake of 363 AD, & the early Islamic period in the 7th century, when it was abandoned. Hard to believe that it was not rediscovered until 1812 AD by Swiss explorer Johann Ludwig Burckhardt.
