To holmertz: immigrants

gert

I am a son of portuguese immigrants, but of course the cultural chock is very small if compared with other cultures here.
I remember a son of japanese who lived here (he died yet) once he went to japan to work. he was ever so proud of his original country and ever despising brazilian culture as inferior. when he arrived there he become to talk with the locals who were admired because he was using a japanese language so pure and so classic, something from the period of before II War. he was well treated by the neighbors, but, one day an old lady asked him where he was born, and he told her he was brazilian, since that day the lady didn't talk with him and then he discovered he wasn't a real japanese, he was a miserable brazilian..
--- while in portugal I faced sometimes some kind of despise level with brazilians, nothing so unpleasant with me... but I am proud of my heritage and I am proud of the place where I was born. I am rich because I has two worlds inside me. prejudice is a sad poverty.
brazilian culture is ever trying to swallow the foreign, there is no ghettos and those areas with many immigrants were swallowed in the next generation.
