Remember, this devotion for our lady of good death is very old. In those days, an even today, to die isn't a nice thing as you said. But remember 100 years ago we had no medicines, not protective laws against violence, not anesthesia, much more wars, etc... this devotion was a way to ask mary to have a not so painful and long death and, of course, a chance to go to the heaven.
