    Merhaba, Bulent -

I think everyone who's ever been there has one of these; I know I do. I do like the way the people are grouped; it's more interesting than most I've seen.

One thing that bothers me about the Taj is that they charge $15 a visit. I would have loved to have gone back there early the next morning and catch the dawn light on the building. But I didn't want to buy another ticket for few minutes' worth of shots.

That's a beautiful shot of Burg Satzvey - the bright flowers are a great counterbalance to the dark clouds above. Some of the colors in the flowers seem a bit oversaturated, but it's still a lovely photo.

You should make it back to satzvey for their medieval Christmas market - it's fantastic!

    Merhaba, Bulent -

Interesting sign, not least because the joke only works in English, not Dutch. Nicely done considering the poor light.

About that Nightwatch story; I'd heard that it was cut back to fit the company HQ, not the museum. I'd be greatly disappointed to hear it was the museum's fault, since I think of the Rijksmuseum as one of the best and most thoughtful in Europe. Oh, well.

I had to read all the way through your (as usual) excellent note to find out what you'd done here, as I do not remember a lake in front of Monticello. Very good angle - and it helps that the clouds were nice and cooperative (unlike when I was there). Jefferson would have approved.

An interesting angle which exaggerates the power of his hands. I see Maggie has already commented on the color issue, so I won't. I do like the way the head is illuminated with the bits of tree behind it. I tried a B&W conversion and posted it to the WS; see what you think. (The process I use is too complex to include in the WS note, but I can describe it for you offline if you want.)

Like many great men, FDR was a study in contradictions. I greatly appreciate how he rescued the US from the Great Depression (a rescue which the Republicans have spent decades trying to undo, and in so doing created the financial mess that Barack Obama has inherited). On the other hand, he did, as you and Maggie discussed, abandon Eastern Europe to Stalin's tender mercies, and he also closed his eyes to the Holocaust happening to the Jews.

A lovely riot of colors in a nice triangle, and also great stories from the cemetery!

I have to wonder, though, if it's proper to call a photo of living plants a "still life" (nature morte in the original French).

    Salut, Marc -

I find that HDR is useful, or let us say valid, when the result is something we would naturally expect to see. HDR, to my mind, is an attempt to deal with the difference between what the eye can see (around 15 f-stops) and what a digital camera can see (around 4 f-stops).

The problem I have with this rendition, however, is not that it is impossible for the eye to have seen this range. It is that, in composing it, you have altered the texture so that, to my mind, it resembles a painting - a watercolor - more than a photograph. Now, such texture has its place - I've used it myself, but when I did so, I pushed it to the point where it was clearly a painting rather than a photograph. (Which in itself opens up another discussion, but not right now.)

It may be that the qualities of light that day were such that no HDR technique would work (though I couldn't tell enough from the WS). But I am inclined to think it is the technique.

    Good first attempt, though.

    Ciao,
    Dan
