The steps and gate to Shah-i-Zinda are yet another example of modern (even though seemingly old-style) additions to that historic city.

holmertz (44342) 2015-07-26 10:24:22Just a couple of hundred meters from the Upper Square of Olomouc is the Lower Square, Dolní náměstí. It has its own plague column, built at the same time as the Holy Trinity column. This is a so called Marian column, dedicated to the Virgin Mary (who is placed on the top).
I read somewhere that Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart stayed in a house in this square on a visit to Olomouc, but I don't know if it was any of the houses seen here.

The monument was unveiled in 1830 and has seen plenty of action, particularly during WWII when the Nazis added a bronze plaque suggesting the astronomer was actually German. In 1942 a brave boy scout removed the plaque, causing the Nazis to remove the monument and bomb several others as retribution. Fortunately Copernicus was recovered and restored following the war.
