 Palmyra Castle (82) John_F_Kennedy
(22191) | Palmyra Castle, the Arab fort built on a volcanic cone one thousand years after the Roman city below. The 17th century fortifications were built by the Lebanese Emir Fakhr al-Din to defend against Ottoman encroachment.
The Palmyra (or Tadmor in Arabic) was in the ancient times a Greek outpost and was annexed by Rome in 217 A.D. For a long time it was a vital caravan city for travellers crossing the Syrian desert.
In the workshop a closer view to the Palmyra Castle. |
