Cropped to focus the composition on the cat. Applied Contrast Masking to make the background less intense, whilst bringing out detail in shadow areas (NewLayerViaCopy, Desaturate, Invert, Gaussian 19px, Merge layers Overlay 100%). Then used Lasso to grab the cat, knocked the contrast and brightness down on the background, increased them on the cat.
