(364) | Recently, it was big festival time in India and I was at my home town holidaying.
There, one morning, I noticed this unknown creature roaming freely inside my home. When I inquired, I was told that she was the daughter of our maid. Every day, she would accompany her mother to all the houses, where she goes to work and while her mother keeps busy in working, she would sit quietly watching her.
An irony it is for the unprivileged classes in India- with both parents working to counter the hand-to-mouth existence, proper schooling and a good life becomes a distance dream for such children. As soon as they are grown up enough to handle it, they are introduced into small jobs to support their parents manage the family. Large families, poverty, non education and child labor- it is all interlinked here! Sometimes it feels bad, but India is so large a country that things can’t change over-night. Things are being better for sure...
She was so quite and shy that I never heard a word from her. One morning, I persuaded her to pose for me. She agreed hesitantly. It was possibly her first time in life of being photographed and I could almost sense her zeal in her uneasy childish expressions, her heart popping with joy!
Future stands dark and gloomy for her, but she is still wearing the winning Indian smile. They say there is nothing more b'ful in life than 'hope'. I hope destiny has decided a better treatment for my little friend...
When I asked her name, she replied shyly, "Lovely!"... |

This is a typical magazine shot, with a blank area left for type, headline etc. I have cloned a bit more wall to her left because i think it improves the framing/composition, making it more balanced.
Then I used auto in curves, then the dodge tool set to 'midtones' at 50% exposure, and the brush (for this image) set at 149px, just lightening the right eye and hair above enough to even out the lighting. Then a bit of extra blue in curves and took in the RGB blacks to add a little contrast. It isn't perfect I know, but hopefully you get the idea. M |
