San Vittore (60)

This is the most impressive church San Vittore (St. Victor) in Muralto, a village next to Locarno in the Swiss canton Ticino. It was built from 1090 to 1110. Its "campanile", the steeple, was added in the 16th century. Its outside wall is decorated by a marble relief of St. Victor on horseback (see workshop) which was sculptured in 1460. It actually was determined to decorate Locarno's castle.

The three naves of St. Vittore (see workshop) were painted with wonderful frescos between the 12th and the 17th century.
Under the choir there's a wonderful Romanesque crypt - it's said, the most beautiful of Switzerland. I'll show it tomorrow.

It's interesting that the Holy Trinity - as you can see here - was illustrated at the banner of St. Victor by three bearded heads of saints. This kind of representation of the Trinity is forbidden by the pope since 1628.
