Some children collecting something – herbs, firewood... I really don't know – on the Dieng Plateau in central Java. The Dieng Plateau is known for several small Hindu temples from the 7th and 8th centuries, but the most striking feature of this desolate area, some 2000 meters above sea level, is the volcanic activity. It is often misty, as in this picture, with smoke smelling of sulphur creeping out of the ground.
A wider view of the area, when the sun hade broken through the clouds, can be seen in a workshop.
Both pictures were taken in 1976 and were scanned from Kodachrome slides.
